Welcome to the Honolulu Orchid Society (HOS). The monthly HOS meeting is held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. This month's meeting begins at 7:30 P.M. in the Cafetorium of the Lanakila Elementary School.
“PAPHIOPEDILUMS AND PHRAGMIPEDIUM CULTURE” What’s that!!! And twice as hard to pronounce for anyone new to orchids. Dale Miyasaki, an accredited HOS/AOS orchid judge, will enlighten us with all the aspects of the lifeline and will pass on his knowledge of how to grow and care for these orchids. Take time from your busy schedules and come on in to the meeting to learn more. Bring your notebook and pen or pencil to take notes.
MAHALO NUI LOA! Thank you Calvin Kumano for the great presentation of “The Simplicity of Growing Phalaenopsis”. Everyone was so intense on learning about the phalaenopsis and appreciated the knowledge passed on. We also thank our refreshment committee Tom Uyesugi for the beverages and Vivian McCoy for the Chicken Salad & Turkey Croissants Sandwiches, Pound Cake and Red Grapes and members for the delicious refreshments provided: Mountain Apple Cobbler by Charlotte Yamamoto, Haupia Cake by Audrey Yasutake, Lime Jell-O Cheesecake by Laura Lui.
Why NOT Orchids! is the theme for the Honolulu Orchid Society's 70th Annual Orchid Show and Plant Sales.
The show will be held at the McKinley High School Cafeteria, located at 1039 South King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii. (Enter the school grounds from the entrance located on Pensacola Street.) Show schedule is as follows: Friday and Saturday, October 9 & 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Sunday, October 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with plant sales closing at 3:00 p.m.
Because of the larger venue, we need more members to help. We need at least 25 people to help at the Entrance and Exits, Hosting, Security, Hospitality, HOS Table, Horseshoe game, and Miscellaneous duties. Shifts on Friday and Saturday are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Sunday, shifts are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We also need volunteers after the show area is cleared to clean up and move the tables back in place. Do your share and sign up to help your society.
The second shift members are requested to report ½ hour before their 1:30 shift on Friday and Saturday, so they can have lunch before their shift starts; on Sunday, report at 12:30 for lunch prior to your 1:00 p.m. shift. (PLEASE NOTE: A dinner meal will not be served on Friday, Saturday & Sunday)
Carol De Witt will have the work schedule sign up sheet at our September meeting. Please be generous with your time. We also need baked goods, plants and usable “white elephant” items, etc., for the HOS Table. We will also be selling cookies and other selected items donated by donors who want to help the McKinley High School Athletic Department. (Members please bring your donated items to the HOS TABLE and sign in what you brought — DO NOT JUST DROP OFF & LEAVE. You may preprice your goods if you want to, otherwise the volunteers at the table will do the pricing. All proceeds from the items members bring in will be donated to HOS.
It will be a beautiful show with 13 commercial vendors. Additional details about the orchid culture lectures and other show related topics are forthcoming...please check back in a few weeks.
Show setup and judging will be on October 8 (Thursday).
