HOS to Participate at Kunia and Windward Orchid Shows in March

It will be a busy week for the Honolulu Orchid Society during the week of March 15, 2012.  The Society will be putting up a large floor display at the Kunia Orchid Show and a table top display at the Windward Orchid Show.  Set up for both Shows will be on Thursday, March 15.  Members and guests who wish to display their orchid plants in the HOS display at either or both Shows should bring in and register their plants before 11 AM on Thursday.  Plants for the Kunia Orchid Show should be brought to the Leilehua High School gymnasium located at 1515 California Avenue in Wahiawa.  Plants for the Windward Orchid Show should be brought to the King Intermediate School Armory (Gym) located at 46-155 Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe.  The HOS display at Kunia will be chaired by Williette Wong while the HOS display at Windward will be chaired by Dr. Ingelia White.  Members and guests are encouraged to stay and help put up the displays.  More information on the Shows can be found in the March 2012 HOS Newsletter.  Breakdown of the displays will occur at 4 PM on Sunday, March 18 at the close of the Shows.

Brunch at Hale Ikena Kick-Off New Year

The Honolulu Orchid Society held its 2012 Installation Banquet on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the Hale Ikena Restaurant on the Golf Course at Fort Shafter .  President Ruth Chun and the newly elected Officers and Board of Trustees were installed at the banquet.  Fifty-four people attended the banquet which featured a brunch buffet of fresh fruits, assorted fresh vegetables, pastries, hot breakfast and lunch entrees, desserts and beverages.  All who attended left with armloads of flowering orchid plants and seedlings.  The banquet festivities were captured by photographers Calvin Abe and Melvin Waki.  Click on the images for a larger view.

More than 50 members and guests attended the Banquet held at the Hale Ikena Restaurant.

Williette Wong gave the invocation.

Officers and Trustees for 2012 were sworn in by Dr. Yoneo Sagawa.

Calvin and Sherry Abe won the Grand Prize during the lucky number festivities.

Den. alexandrae ‘Hihimanu’ Wins Best in Show

Den. alexandrae ‘Hihimanu’ exhibited by H&R Nurseries won the Best in Show Trophy at the 2011 Honolulu Orchid Society Show held October 7-9, 2011 at the Washington Middle School Cafeteria.  The plant which received a Certificate of Cultural Merit by the Honolulu Orchid Society Judges had 464 flowers on 58 inflorescences.  The flowers were light chartruese overall with lavender spotting on the back of the flowers.
