In Bloom – Bulbophyllum vaginatum

In Bloom – Bulbophyllum vaginatum

We purchased Bulb. vaginatum four years ago from the late Wilbur Chang.  The plant was transplanted into a wooden basket using New Zealand Sphagnum Moss as the medium.  The plant receives afternoon lighting under 50% shade at our home in Mililani.  The plant is watered early in the morning and in the afternoon during the Summer months.  The plant is fed 13-2-13 fertilizer and dolomite.  We displayed the plant at the Aiea Orchid Club meeting on June 24, 2013 (see more »

In Bloom – Dendrobium wasselii

In Bloom – Dendrobium wasselii

Den wasselii is a very easy growing species.  The tiny white flowers which look like mosquitoes will last for two weeks or longer.  I grow my wasselii’s in a shady area with New Zealand Sphagnum Moss or orchid bark as the media.  This plant would probably be very happy growing and hanging in a basket.  With patience, you can grow the plant into a spectacular specimen plant with many spikes of flowers.   (Article and photo by Mel Waki)

In Bloom – Dendrobium parishii

In Bloom – Dendrobium parishii

Although the honohono (Den. anosmum) is over, Den. parishii is now in bloom.  Den. parishii crossed with Den. anosmum made Den. Nestor.  Here are photos of some parishii’s in bloom in my collection.  (Article and photos submitted by Mel Waki.)
