Silent Auction Will Be Held at the March Meeting

Dtps. Taiwan Red Cat 'Red Cat' will be one of the plants available for auction at the HOS Silent Auction.

Members and guests wishing to expand their orchid collection should attend the March 14 General Membership meeting of the Honolulu Orchid Society. A silent auction will be held of plants donated by about 20 orchid nurseries in Hawaii. The Auction will be chaired by Ben Kodama, Jr. The Auction provides an excellent opportunity to obtain quality plants at very reasonable prices. Besides plants, attendees can bid on baked goods and other foods baked by members. Funds from the auction will be used to defray the operational expenses of the Society. The Auction will start immediately following a short business meeting beginning at 7:30 PM.

The Honolulu Orchid Society meets on every second Wednesday of the month at the Lanakila Elementary School Cafeteria. Guests are more than welcome to attend.

Brunch at Hale Ikena Kick-Off New Year

The Honolulu Orchid Society held its 2012 Installation Banquet on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the Hale Ikena Restaurant on the Golf Course at Fort Shafter . President Ruth Chun and the newly elected Officers and Board of Trustees were installed at the banquet. Fifty-four people attended the banquet which featured a brunch buffet of fresh fruits, assorted fresh vegetables, pastries, hot breakfast and lunch entrees, desserts and beverages. All who attended left with armloads of flowering orchid plants and seedlings. The banquet festivities were captured by photographers Calvin Abe and Melvin Waki. More than 50 members and guests attended the Banquet held at the Hale Ikena Restaurant.

Williette Wong gave the invocation.

Officers and Trustees for 2012 were sworn in by Dr. Yoneo Sagawa.

Calvin and Sherry Abe won the Grand Prize during the lucky number festivities.

Roy Higa walked away with one of the featured door prizes.

Den. alexandrae ‘Hihimanu’ Wins Best in Show

Den. alexandrae ‘Hihimanu’ exhibited by H&R Nurseries won the Best in Show Trophy at the 2011 Honolulu Orchid Society Show held October 7-9, 2011 at the Washington Middle School Cafeteria. The plant which received a Certificate of Cultural Merit by the Honolulu Orchid Society Judges had 464 flowers on 58 inflorescences. The flowers were light chartruese overall with lavender spotting on the back of the flowers.

2011 Show a Big Hit

The Honolulu Orchid Society held its 72nd Annual Orchid Show on October 7-9, 2011 at the Washington Middle School Cafeteria. Show Chairman Williette Wong greeted the line of people waiting to enter the Show on opening day. It was the start of many good things to come. The weather during the entire weekend was nice and sunny and the stream of people visiting the Show during the three days was a delight to see. The eleven vendors were very happy to see people browsing their booths and purchasing plants. The sales area surrounded five beautiful displays put up by the Aiea Orchid Club, the Windward Ochid Society, the Hawaii Kai Orchid Society, the Honolulu Orchid Society and Hui Okika O Kunia. Hui Okika O Kunia won the best display trophy. Their display is shown in the photograph above. Orchid culture lectures were held during the Show. These lectures were well attended as people were very interested in growing orchids.

Next year’s Show will be held at the same location on October 5-7. 2012.

Election of 2012 Officers and Trustees Held at July Membership Meeting

Election of Officers and Trustees for 2012 was conducted during the July 13, 2011 General Membership Meeting of the Honolulu Orchid Society. The slate recommended by the Nomination Committee headed by Ikaika Peltier was unanimously accepted and elected by the members present. HOS Members Try Shredded Rubber Tires

Shredded rubber may become the in-thing for orchid growers if an experiment by HOS members prove successful. At a workshop conducted during the general membership meeting on Thursday, May 12, thirty-five members planted orchid seedlings (Dendrobiums and Calanthes) using shredded rubber from recycled tires. Workshop instructor Mel Waki has been experimenting with the shredded rubber as a media for dendrobiums, cattleyas and epidendrums. So far the experiment has been very positive. The orchids seem to like the rubber media with nice root and plant growth. Waki saw bags of the shredded rubber at Sam’s Club in Pearl City two years ago. It was being sold in a 1.15 cubic foot bag as a mulch for landscapes, play areas, golf courses, pool and pond areas and yards. The rubber was dyed red and was about the same size as medium orchid bark. Waki purchased a bag but did not use it on orchids until several months ago. The shredded rubber has the appearance and consistency of orchid bark. It has a similar density as bark so the rubber will not float, compact or blow away. The shredded rubber has lots of void space so it will retain moisture. It is extremely clean to work with and will not breakdown. The shredded rubber has been processed so all of the wire from the steel belted tires have been removed. The shredded rubber has a rubbery smell but is non-toxic and latex free. The shredded rubber is currently available at Home Depot in 0.8 cubic foot plastic bags for $10. It is being sold as Vigoro Rubber Mulch in red or brown color. Waki encouraged members to try the shredded rubber on a few selected plants in their collection to see how things go. At the workshop, members planted their orchid seedlings in 3 and 4-inch plastic pots with a 3-5 foam peanuts at the bottom. The shredded rubber was used straight without peat moss or perlite. A few pellets of Nutricote fertilizer (13-13-13) was added as dressing on the top. Most members preferred the red colored rubber. Updates on the experiment will be reported in this forum.

HOS Closes a Busy Week with a Display at the 2011 Windward Orchid Show

Dr. Ingelia White with the help of Ben Kodama, Jr., and Christine Lin put up a Table Top Display for the Honolulu Orchid Society at the 2011 Windward Orchid Show. The Show was held during March 18-20, 2011 in the King Intermediate School Gymnasium. The HOS Display took the 3rd Place Trophy for Table Top Displays at the Show. The display showed off plants from Ben Kodama, Jr., David Bealer, Pam Waki, Margaret Lin, Dr. White and Frank Thrall.

HOS Captures Best Large Display Trophy at 2011 Kunia Orchid Show

The Honolulu Orchid Society took the first place trophy for a large floor display at the 2011 Kunia Orchid Show. This was the second year in a row that HOS has taken the 1st place trophy at Kunia. The Show was held in the Leilehua High School Gymnasium during March 18-20, 2011. Congratulations go to co-chairs Williette Wong and Carol De Witt and their hard working crew for the eye catching display. About a dozen members brought plants for the display. Several won trophies as the best in their categories. Dendrobium Paul Paquette ‘Calvin T. Abe’ owned by Calvin and Sherry Abe won the prestigious Best in Show trophy. Other trophy winners in the HOS Display included Bill and Hilda Takamatsu’s Den. Big Alex x Den. Silver Wings (Best Lavender Dendrobium), Williette Wong’s Dtps. I-Hsin Cinderella (Best Yellow Phalaenopsis), Pam Waki’s V. Yuuko Iso-Sumida ‘Ted Sumida’ (Best Vanda and Best Semi-Terete Vanda), Roy Andrade’s Epi. Pacific Sunrise (Best Epidendrum), Calvin and Sherry Abe’s Brsdm. Lillian Oka ‘Lillian’ (Best Oncidium), Williette Wong’s Paph. Duguesclin (Best Paphiopedilum), and Kim Fernandez’s Paph. Michael Koopowitz (Best Multi-Floral Paphiopedilum).

HOS Judges Issue Twenty-Seven Merit Awards in 2010

The Honolulu Orchid Society Judging Panel issued twenty-seven awards in 2010. There were eight plants that received Awards of Merit (A.M.), five plants that received Certificates of Recognition (C.R.), thirteen plants that received Certificates of Cultural Merit (C.C.M.), and one plant that received a Certificate of Distinctive Character (C.D.C.). Nine awards were given at the Kunia Orchid Show and five were given at the Honolulu Orchid Society Show. Ruth Chun Installed as President of HOS

Ruth P. Chun was installed as President of the Honolulu Orchid Society during the Society’s Annual Business Meeting and Installation Banquet held on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the Hale Ikena Restaurant at Fort Shafter. Chun succeeds Ben Sills who served as President in 2009 and 2010. Chun is a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she earned her Bachelor of Art degree in Sociology and Psychology, Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education, and Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is retired from the State Department of Education where she served as a school teacher, vice-principal, and State specialist in community education. She is a certified judge of the American Orchid Society and the Honolulu Orchid Society.

Next Year’s HOS Show Pegged for October 7-9, 2011 at Washington Middle School

Four days after closing the 2010 Show, HOS President Ben Sills signed an agreement with officials at Washington Middle School to reserve the School’s cafeteria on October 7-9, 2011 for the Honolulu Orchid Society’s 72nd Annual Orchid Plant and Flower Show. Sills and 2010 Show Chairman Williette Wong visited the School on Thursday, October 14, to sign the agreement. This marks an HOS milestone for setting the date of a Show one year ahead of time.

The 2010 Honolulu Orchid Society Show is over. The Show was closed by Show Chairman Williette Wong at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 10, 2010.

Four orchid societies (Aiea, Hawaii Kai, Kunia and Windward) put up displays. There were 11 vendors.

The Windward Orchid Society won first place for the Best Display Competition. They received $200 for their first place prize.

The Aiea Orchid Club won second place for the Best Display Competition.

The Hawaii Kai Orchid Society won third place for the Best Display Competition.

The Kunia Orchid Society had several trophies in their display.
