About Honolulu Orchid Society Judging

The Honolulu Orchid Society, Inc. was founded in 1939 by thirteen orchidists. At that time, it was proposed that the Society should organize to judge orchid plants in Hawaii.

The chief reason was the need to recognize meritorious plants in Hawaii since all the flowers at that time were sent to the American Orchid Society judging system in New York for award judging certificates.

During transit the true qualities of the flowers were lost, and many times the flowers were damaged or lost in shipment. Another reason for this proposal was to recognize the quality plants which were produced by Hawaiian growers and to give them added incentive to grow and produce finer Hawaiian hybrids.
