Ludisia discolor is a warm growing terrestrial or lithophytic species from China, Myanamar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines. This species grows in shady lowland forests, where there are rocky substrates near rivers and streams. The typical form has red lateral lines on the leaves. The variety nigrescens has a prominent white line along the midrib of the leaf. There may be some white lines parallel to the midrib.
Ludisias are grown primarily for the foliage, and are known as “Jewel Orchids”.
