Honolulu Orchid Society Holds Installation Banquet at Hale Ikena
The first business meeting of the year, including the installation of the 2015 Board members, was held at Hale Ikena in Ft. Shafter from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 18, 2015. Due to a power failure upon arrival, the food service was delayed for approximately an hour. The program was revised to meet the change, and 52 attendees waited patiently for the food to be ready while participating in the program.
Beautiful orchid plants, given away by “lucky name” drawings, covered the tables on one side of the room. The room, filled with special guests, members, family, and friends, graciously waited to enjoy the popular Sunday Brunch that would followed the recognition of the invited guests, the President’s Annual Report, the introduction and rewarding of the outgoing Board, the installation of the 2015 Officers and Trustees by Dr. Ingelia White, the President’s message, the recognition of a few outstanding members, and the Invocation by Williette Wong. Each special guest, 2014 Board member, and outstanding member received a blooming plant. Each outgoing Board member also received a watering container filled with treats from their President in appreciation for serving the Society throughout the year.
Following the delectable meal and picture-taking of the 2015 Board, President Ruth Chun announced the Board’s choice of 2014 Orchidist of the Year as Brad Lau. She presented him with a $100 gift certificate for his outstanding service to the society.
The Board’s decision to spend $1,000 for orchid plants as giveaways made orchid lovers in attendance a sight to see as their names were called. It certainly was a very good way to start Year 2015!
