Catasetum Melana Davison is a cross of Ctsm. denticulatum x Ctsm. Penang, made by Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids. The smaller plant and flower size, higher flower count, flower arrangement, spotting, and denticulate lip margins are inherited from the Ctsm. denticulatum parentage. The lip shape and cavity are inherited from Ctsm. pileatum. The callus on the lip is inherited from Ctsm. expansum. The coloring on the female flowers is from Ctsm. denticulatum. This hybrid can produce multiple spikes, 2 to 3 times per year, another trait from Ctsm. denticulatum! (Photo of female flowers from last November for reference)
